Reflexology
Although developed only in the last century as a science, reflexology can be traced back thousands of years. The oldest reference which is considered to be of reflexology treatment was found in the tomb of the Egyptian Ankmahor, dating back about 4,500 years. In addition, there is evidence that foot/reflexology treatments have been performed in China and India for many hundreds of years.
The scientific development of modern reflexology came out of work on meridians and zones on the feet during the late 19th /early 20th century, but was driven forward to the therapy we know today by Eunice Ingham who spent her life identifying the reflex points.
What is Reflexology?
To answer this, I normally start with what reflexology is not! It is not a simple foot massage, although massage techniques are part of the treatment to relax the foot before and after the therapy. The principal of reflexology is that there are reflex points at the extremities of the body that are mirrored elsewhere in the body, including internal organs and systems. To draw a simple analogy, the reflex point is like a nerve end, which traces back to a nerve end in another part of the body. Reflexology is the art of knowing where these reflex points connect, and by stimulating them, they will in turn stimulate the organ or system it is ‘connected’ to.
In addition, by working on the meridians, reflexology helps to clear blockages of energy or ‘chi’ in the body, so allowing free flow and helping to return the vitality and balance. By clearing these blocks, it allows the body to work more efficiently on healing itself.
Note how I state that reflex points are to be found at the ‘extremities’. We do, generally, associate reflexology with the feet, although there are reflex points to be found in the hands, the face, the ears, etc. Generally, though, we tend to work the feet as they are more sensitive to work with and tend to provide a clearer ‘body map’ to work on.
What are the benefits of Reflexology?
There are many therapies on offer to provide relaxation or ‘pampering’, but the majority tend to be working on the outer body. Reflexology, by stimulating points attached within the body, is like giving a massage to the inner organs, glands and systems, as well as the outer body. Reflexology can help to:
- Ease stress
- Provide relief from acute and chronic conditions
- Free energy flows in the body
- Improve sleep patterns
- Balance the body
Reflexology should not be seen as a diagnosis, more as a preventative, holistic treatment which can ease old scars and allow in new vitality. With regular treatment, reflexology can provide an ‘MOT’ for the body, and make for a healthier, more energetic life.
How long is a session?
A treatment will normally last about 45 minutes, though there will be a consultation beforehand of about 15-20 minutes which will help in gauging the progress of the course of treatments.
